This guide shows how to easily extract subtitle streams from DVD in the native IDX+SUB subtitle format. This format, also known as VobSub, is very flexible and portable, and widely supported by devices and media players.

After downloading the VobSub Ripper Wizard tool, open it directly (no installer is included).
Click on Load IFO and select the main DVD movie file from the VIDEO_TS folder (for example, VTS_01_1.IFO, and not VIDEO_TS.IFO).
Click Save To and select the location where the video file is located. Make sure to use the same name as the video file, to auto-load the subtitles with the video later.
Click Next to continue.

On the second screen, you can select the languages to rip. One of the advantages of IDX+SUB subtitles, besides the custom style and position, is the ability to store many languges.
In this case our DVD has only spanish subtitles, which are pre-selected by default.
Click Next to proceed.

Once the process is completed, the subtitle files with IDX and SUB Vobsubextension will be created. You can then load these subtitles on most players like Windows Media Player classic, view them in your standalone DVD player (if supported) or on your SmartTV.
To auto-load these subtitles on your player, make sure both IDX and SUB files have the same name as the video file.

IDX file. The SUB file is a binary file containing the bitmaps of the subtitle texts. The IDX file is a text file with a list of entries, one for each subtitle. Each entry has the time when it should be displayed in the video, a value indicating the offset into the SUB file where the subtitle text bitmap can be found, the subtitle position in the screen, and other information.
Since they're stored in separate files VobSub subtitles are very portable. This format can be muxed into MKV files easily, and many standalone DVD players support them for viewing DivX/XviD or any supported video file.

The only drawback from this format (like any other bitmap-based format) is that you cannot edit the subtitles with any subtitle editing program. You might be able to edit the position and display time, but editing individual text from these subtitles is virtually impossible. To edit the subtitles, you should first convert them to a text-based format, such as SubRip (SRT), using an OCR-capable subtitle ripper.
